(Breaking Dawn and Fringe SPOILER ALERT)
Dear Stephenie,
Did you catch the second episode of the new (almost-as-good-as Alias, probably-like-X-Files) show on Fox, Fringe? I know you’re sad, sad, sad right now about the internet-leaking of Midnight Sun, and probably you have better things to do than watch House and Fringe on Tuesday nights. Like write. Or play with your three sons or talk to your husband. But some of us don’t (or, we do, but, our husbands have Scouts on Tuesdays anyway, and the kids are asleep/snacking/screaming in their rooms, and writing isn’t getting us anywhere that it’s taking you).
So there I was, watching my new show Fringe, and I have to tell you that Bella’s pregnancy and delivery in Breaking Dawn was my favorite part of that book. I loved how Re-gag-me was a vampiric parasite, much like all babies, who leach the calcium from their mother’s bones and who, if you’re Rh-negative and have a husband who’s Rh-positive, all of your kids will be A-positive and you have to get two extra shots and even more blood drawn so your body won’t turn on them. Which, if you think about it and you think that vampirism is like a virus or blood disease, really makes sense.

Anyway, the good people writing Fringe totally stole your idea of the baby who develops, in utero and out, much faster than normal. Of course, they followed the logical conclusion that aging and death would also come prematurely, whereas you came up with some ducks machine about development stopping at a very auspicious time, say, right when Re-gag-me would be a perfect age for the imprinting/newly-vampirphiliac Jacob.
I think Pacey would make a good Jacob, actually, which is another sign that you’ve been talking to J.J. Abrams lately. Or maybe you need a good copyright attorney.

Actually it happened once on Star Trek TNG like 15 years ago. Some alien force floated into Deanna Troi’s room while she was sleeping and knocked her up. The baby was born full term like a day later, and fully grown within a couple of weeks. When I first read about the fast pregnancy in Breaking Dawn this episode is what I thought of and wondered if that’s where she got the idea.

Did you watch Stephanie Meyer on Ellen? She thought of the story from a dream she had. (Ellen says, “Wow, you must sleep for a long time”. Ha ha.) Do you think stories about vampires can be inspired?
The last time we were in the temple, Jake came out and said, “I just got the craziest idea for a sci-fi book.” Maybe that was inspired. Maybe we’re losing out on our billions because he didn’t write it all down.

The pregnancy is Breaking Dawn was great. So unexpected, so contrary to our expectations of reading about Edward and Bella at Dartmouth. And, once again, she hit on something real disguised as something fantastic–the idea that your fetus is a monstrous parasite that you love.
I think it’s good the pregnancy sped up, just so the plot didn’t drag.
The DeusExMachina, oh well. I was also irritated by unnecessary happy endings in Harry Potter. The House Cup should have gone to Slitherin in the first book.
I’m totally going to check out Fringe now.

I was thinking the same thing, Jane! I’ll bet Stephenie Meyer caught the episode. If you haven’t seen her Myspace page in the last week, she has a Walter Bishop quote (the one about cows) from the first episode.

Another Alias fan! Seriously the best show ever…I will watch anything JJ puts out. I had the same thought about the weird baby story line too. I loved the ‘birth’ scene in Breaking Dawn, although I have to say that the very end of the book where Bella lets Edward into her head is my favorite part. Thanks for your blog, I loved it.

If anyone has seen HBO’s True Blood then you will obviously see similarities between the series and the new show, just a little jumbled. Its about how vampires dont feed on humans because they have a True Blood drink that gets them by. They move at superhuman speed and have the intoxicating scent about them that lures humans in and the boy vampire falls for the human girl. They switch it up though in that the human girl can read minds but for some reason cant read his and loves being with him because she doesnt have to hear his thoughts(hmm very familiar). Everyone tells her not to trust him or be with him but she cant control herself. And drinking their blood wont turn you into a vampire, but their saliva will heal your wounds. I swear at some points she should sue for copyright infringment

Sorry to burst your bubble, but True Blood is based off the books “Southern Vampire Mysteries,” and guess what? It was published about 4 years before “Twilight.” I, too, thought TB was a reversed “Twilight,” and was sad to find out that TB actually came first. :/

I looked on google to see if anyone else was thinking Stephenie Meyer was inspired a bit from Southern Vampire Mysteries, and just to add, that book even has a “best friend” who is in love with Sookie (the main character), who is a shpeshifter (hmmm.. that all does sound familiar) came in a dream, huh Stephenie?
